Your Website is a Work of Art: Never Finished, Only Abandoned

Leonardo Da Vinci was a pretty smart guy.

He was a master inventor. He was a world-class painter. And, if you’re to believe Dan Brown, he hid tons of secrets in his art about the Holy Grail.

Da Vinci certainly knew a lot about art; he’s got hundreds and hundreds of paintings and sculptures to his name.

But while he created amazing works centuries before the advent of Photoshop, there’s one quote he’s famous for that applies to anyone creating or maintaining an website today.

Art is never finished, only abandoned.

Artists are never really done with a project – there’s always more that can be improved. Yes, of course, you get to a point where you can show off your work, but that doesn’t mean you can call it a masterpiece and move on.

When you’re building a website, it’s the same idea. You’re going to get to a point where you’re ready to launch it — and that’s great (in fact, we love it) – but that’s only the beginning. In no way does launching a website mean you are done with it.

Building is Only the Beginning

You can’t design a website, throw it up online and call it a day. That’s not building a site – that’s abandoning it.

Technology changes so quickly that what’s new today is outdated tomorrow. The state-of-the-art site that you built last year has been surpassed by the sites being built today. Whether it’s responsive design or Retina display graphics or frameworks or improved analytics, there’s so much you can do to continue to grow your site.

And it’s not just on the technology side. Improving your content is crucial. Ongoing email marketing and engaging with your community via social media all contribute to improving your digital canvas.

Don’t Let it Happen to You

I’ve seen it happen too often; a site goes up online and the project is labeled “complete.” That’s the point of abandonment.

Sometimes you just get caught up in the day-to-day of running a business or a website and you start to fall behind the bigger trends you should be paying attention to. It happens. (It happens to us, too, which is why our blog has been relatively quiet over the past month or so.)

Keep pushing forward. Never settle, and don’t let your site get stagnant.

You’re never finished – and that’s what makes it so exciting.
